Student records updated
when student logs in

One of the exciting enhancements coming in the 5.3.007 release of RMS (due out Fall ’09) is the development of a Student Web Polling Authentication Interface. The intial version uses portal authenication and LDAP being developed shortly thereafter.

Clients who opt for this interface will have the ability to import students and their demographic information into RMS directly when the student accesses the RMS Student Web.

In general, here is how it works:
The client establishes an ODBC connection to a table containing any student who is eligible to access RMS. When a new student that is not in RMS enters the campus portal and clicks the RMS link, the interface creates a profile and downloads selected demographic information (similar to the import profile). The student is then taken to the Logged in User Welcome page and has access to functins and links based on whatever category ID was specified for them (If no category ID was downloaded, they are assigned to the RMS default category of Not Decided).

If a student already exists in RMS, clients may opt to have the interface update the students record in RMS. So every time the student logs into RMS, their profile records could be updated.

With this new approach and interface, clients no longer are required to import 20,000 student records just so the 2,000 who ultimately apply for housing can do so.

As we approach the release of 5.3.007, be on the lookout for more exciting news about this new and powerful interface.
