Student Web Polling Interface

Coming early next week a new interface specifically designed for the student web. Currently, a school using portal authentication for the student web is limited to students in the RMS database. This poses a problem for those schools who do not know who is applying for housing until they do so. To use portal authentication, the school would have to import all students may apply for housing; which could be quite a number of records. . The intent of the Student Web Polling Interface is to load student demographic (e.g. profile) data into RMS from an external system the first time a student logs into the Student Web of RMS and/or every time the student logs in. This bypasses the need to create profiles for all students so that they may apply for housing. The interface has the ability to connect with any number of campus systems including but not limited to Banner, PeopleSoft, Datatel, and many “home grown” systems.

As the student is authenticated via the RMS Portal page, a comparison value is sent to the interface. The interface then goes out and picks up the matching record. This record is loaded from the source location into a temporary table in RMS, validated, and then distributed throughout the program. Data can be manipulated prior to entry into the temporary table, prior to distribution throughout the program, just before the interface completes, or all in all three places. The interface will have the option to update student records as well as insert new records.

The SW Polling Interface is designed to assign the student a category for use on the student web. It also has the option to create a new application for both new and current students and adjust incident and privacy flags.

The first version is limited to a portal authentication with LDAP following later.
